Polynucleotides

You may not have heard of polynucleotides before; firstly, what is it? DNA is an example of a polynucleotide. Polynucleotides used in cosmetic medicine are made from highly purified fragments of DNA, extracted from trout or salmon sperm. These fragments of DNA are distilled into different strengths and suspended in sterile water ready for injection. The polynucleotides in Plinest, Plinest Eye, Newest and Plinest Hair are extracted from the same trout used in the food industry. Trout and salmon sperm DNA closely resembles human DNA.

Polynucleotides are used in aesthetic medicine to help improve dull skin, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, redness, dark circles, acne scarring, stretchmarks, surgical scars and hair loss. It is a versatile treatment that can be used on skin anywhere on the body, not just the face and scalp.

Polynucleotides stimulate a receptor that sits on top of cells, which triggers the repair and production of new fibroblasts, which help to boost the skin’s structural framework. Polynucleotides boost collagen and elastin formation and increase hyaluronic acid production in the skin. They lead to the production of new micro-blood vessels which are able to provide more nutrients and oxygen to the surrounding tissues and improve wound healing and tissue repair. Polynucleotides are able to regulate the activity of melanocyte cells, which produce pigmentation and reduce inflammation within the skin. In terms of stimulating new hair growth, polynucleotides have been found to regenerate hair follicles and can be an excellent treatment for hair loss in females and males.

After numbing cream is applied to the skin and the skin is thoroughly cleaned, polynucleotides are injected into the superficial layer of the skin. Either a fine needle or a cannula is used to administer the treatment into the target area. A course of 3 – 4 treatments 3 weeks apart is recommended to achieve optimal results. The results are not instant but improvement can be noted from about 3 weeks and continues to improve over 3 months. Patients report a general improvement in the skin and report skin feels smoother and better hydrated. Fine lines and wrinkles appear softer, and acne scarring looks less pronounced. When treating hair loss in the crown of the head or near the hairline, new hair growth can be noted. It is important to note, however, that as with any injectable treatment, results will vary between individuals as the clinical response of the treatment will depend on biological factors and lifestyle factors. To help maintain results after the initial course, a one-off maintenance treatment is recommended every 6 months. If you choose not to maintain the results with further treatment, your skin will return to its pre-treatment state over time.

Frequently asked questions

Dr Nandi will carry out a thorough consultation before suggesting the best treatment. Polynucleotides have been growing in popularity across clinics as more and more people hear of the benefits and great results people have obtained after treatment. It is great for adults of all ages who are concerned with fine lines, loss of tone, dryness, laxity, acne scars, stretch marks and sun damage.

The polynucleotides are highly purified and then sterilised from a licensed source, the production is regulated and the manufacturing process meets the required CE standards of safety. The science is evidence-based and there are multiple published scientific papers demonstrating safety and efficacy in using polynucleotides.

Dr Nandi will apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area for around 25 minutes before the procedure, as injections can cause a bit of stinging.

Treatment with polynucleotides is a very safe, low-risk treatment. As with many injectable treatments, mild swelling, redness, and bruising are expected side effects. Swelling and redness usually settle within a day or so, and no significant downtime is experienced.

You may continue with most everyday activities, but there will likely be small bumps just under the skin that will be visible and may take around 24 hours to settle. You may also have a few bruises, some mild redness and swelling. Any bruising may be more apparent the next day and can take around 1 – 2 weeks to resolve.
