Chemical Peels

The use of chemical peels is with the intention of exfoliating the topmost layers of the skin in order to disrupt the epidermis and/or dermis.

This triggers the skin’s natural response of healing and repair, which can regenerate new skin cells for a healthier condition and appearance of the skin.

The results from a chemical peel can improve a variety of common skin conditions, including: fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, redness, acne and enlarged pores, by working to improve the texture, firmness and overall condition of the skin.

Over time the skin’s structure alters, bringing with it a number of visible changes. Due to a decline in collagen and elastin as we get older, the skin becomes weak, dry and less elastic. The way in which the skin naturally replenishes itself is also affected as this process slows down and becomes less effective. The youthful glow is compromised and a little intervention is often needed.

Chemical peels are classified as superficial, medium or deep, depending on the depth of penetration into the skin.

A superficial peel targets the topmost layer of the skin (epidermis), to exfoliate and remove any dead skin cells and reveal the younger cells below for a more radiant glow.

The exfoliation brought about by a chemical peel triggers new healthy cells to be formed at the base of the skin layers, which pushes the cells upwards and accelerates the cell renewal process to reveal fresher, healthy skin.

The Bloom Clinic uses superficial chemical peels by AlumierMD and ZO Skin Health due to their excellent reputation in safety and producing successful outcomes. AlumierMD and ZO Skin Health only allow practitioners who have undergone specialist training with them to perform their chemical peels.

The peels are carried out based on the results of a thorough facial assessment. A regular routine will encourage a gradual transformation of the appearance, as well as helping to maintain a healthy, youthful look that lasts.

Frequently asked questions

Chemical peels by AlumierMD and ZO Skin Health are frequently requested to rejuvenate the appearance of the face. However, they are also effective when used on the neck, decolletage, back and hands. It is an effective treatment for those who complain of dullness to their skin, fine lines / wrinkles, uneven texture and tone. A full facial assessment will determine the type of peel that will best benefit your conditions and achieve the results you desire. People who have darker skin tones may require pre-treatment to their skin for a few weeks before certain peels; Dr Nandi will be able to fully advise you if you need this.

Chemical peels by AlumierMD and ZO Skin Health are the preferred brand at The Bloom Clinic. They have a fantastic reputation for safety and in fulfilling the outcomes that each client expects to achieve from a chemical peel. This type of treatment is a popular method of skin rejuvenation for many clinics and is a frequently requested treatment as part of a regular skin care regime. Chemical peels should only be carried out by appropriately trained professionals.

A chemical peel is not intended to be a painful experience and the treatment therefore, requires no anaesthetic. After the solution has been applied to the face the client may feel a warmth or tingling sensation as it develops, but this shouldn’t ‘hurt’.

After the treatment you may experience some facial redness and feeling of tightness to the skin, which is completely normal. After a few days the peeling stage of the treatment may start to take effect. During this time, the skin may feel itchy as the skin starts to shed, but this too is a normal part of the process and is to be expected. You should discuss any allergies or skin issues with Dr Nandi before the treatment in order to eliminate the risk of an allergic reaction or other side effects – which will be outlined in your pre-treatment consultation.

There are a number of chemical peels in the clinic you can choose from. The ZO Stimulator  Peel, also known as ‘the Red Carpet Peel’, is fantastic before a special event and involves no downtime. The other chemical peels usually involve a peeling phase from 2 – 3 days after treatment which lasts for up to 1 week, depending on the strength of the peel. Although this will not cause you any physical disruption, many people prefer to avoid important social engagements for 1 week after a chemical peel – but this can depend on the severity of the shedding. Dr Nandi will advise you regarding the best time to have the treatment and will work around your social commitments. The treatment has no other downtime attached.
