Sensitive Skin

The skin is referred to as being sensitive when it is known to become easily irritated. Although sensitive skin is not considered a medical condition, it is a common concern for many women and men. Those affected will often find that their skin reacts or becomes inflamed when coming into contact with certain products/substances. In most cases, sensitive skin has no obvious cause; however, for some people, it can be as a result of an underlying medical condition.

The symptoms of sensitive skin can vary from person to person. Although all areas of the face and body can be affected, some areas can be more sensitive than others if the skin is naturally thinner, including eyelids, groin and armpits. Subjectively, the skin can itch, sting or burn when exposed to a particular irritant, with visible symptoms such as redness, a rash, spots, hives, dry skin, scaly skin, red bumps, peeling or photosensitivity (reaction to sunlight). Certain medical conditions that cause the skin to be more prone to irritation or reaction can include rosacea, eczema, dermatitis or cutaneous mastocytosis (where the skin releases histamine upon light contact).

A person can do several things to prevent or relieve their sensitive skin from irritation and discomfort. The most effective solution is to avoid contact with a known trigger, such as particular soaps, cosmetics, perfumes or cleaning products. Using products that are soap-free and fragrance-free and opting for gentler acids like lactic acid are kinder to sensitive skin and are less likely to cause a reaction. Moisturisers and sun protection should be part of a regular skincare routine for anybody, but they can also be more critical for those with sensitive skin. These products act as preventative measures to ensure the skin is less likely to become dry or burnt from UV rays.

When considering skincare for sensitive skin, a consultation with Dr Nandi can help recommend the correct type of products to use. The Bloom Clinic stocks AlumierMD, Obagi Medical and ZO Skin Health, specially formulated pharma-grade brands that offer products designed to be kind to sensitive skin.
