Melasma

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes darker patches of skin to develop.

Also known as Chloasma, this concern occurs more often in women than men, developing symmetrically on either side of the face. Although common on the face, including: the cheeks, chin, bridge of nose and forehead, Melasma can also appear on places like the neck and forearms, where frequent exposure to the sun is likely.

This type of skin discolouration is not often found to be harmful, but its appearance can cause embarrassment.

The darker patches of skin that are characteristic of this condition are thought to have a few causes and people with darker skin tones are more prone than those with lighter skin. Levels of oestrogen and progesterone may be an influential factor, which is why pregnant women or those who are taking contraceptive pills will often be affected.

Melasma is also associated with frequent sun exposure as UV rays can affect the Melanocytes (the cells that produce Melanin), and impact on the natural pigmentation of the skin. Thyroid disease and stress are other factors that are thought to contribute to the development of Melasma.

Some people may want to seek medical investigation before considering an effective course of action, to rule out any cause for concern. If Melasma is linked to pregnancy, the woman may find that this concern will disappear on its own.
